MADE TO MEASURE (BESPOKE)

Soletec Systems Limited - in partnership with TPSP in Spain, has a International Design Studio set up to supply a design service to the customer who wishes to have a tailored/custom pair of shoes made to their feet, in any fashion style or trend requested.

The below Case Study is taken from one such customer - who required a pair of brogues - custom  - for him, from a scan supplied from America, with the design being done in the studio in Europe, with the shoes being made in India for quality and cost efficiency.

However Soletec Systems has access to many shoe manufacturers around the world who will produce bespoke/custom shoes to order on our behalf.  Therefore the customer can also choose to have and Italien, Spanish, Portugese, Norwegian or Chinese manufacturer - as well as the Indian manufacturing operation.

CASE STUDY :

This case study sets out the situation of a customer of the group wishing to operate a decentralized web-based system available, with which to deal with customization from different business perspectives, in accordance with figure 1.  The work system is comprised of a distributed architecture where clients are received at the sale point and their feet are digitized. Thanks to the 3D digitization of the feet and a prescription/selection of shoe styles, it is possible to:

  1. Recommend the use of existing shoe models.
  2. Create a file with foot measurements, which compared with the measurements of a set of existing lasts, allows the retrieving of a digital last that properly adapts to the foot measurements.
  3. Create a file including a comparison of the foot measurements with those of a group of existing lasts. This will allow the obtaining of a digital last which is different as regards the left/right foot, and that suitably fits the feet dimensions. Then, the digital last can be sent to a last manufacturer to be produced and this, in turn, to a footwear producer to manufacture the pair of customized shoes.
  4. Manage the orders and manufacturing orders from a Technical Department, which is responsible for the management of the whole process via the Internet.
    •

The system is comprised of several software modules integrated with the digitisation system (described in section 2) as well as the characteristic modules that are necessary for Internet working.

The web-based application allows the following:

  1. Foot-last matching.
  2. Management of models.
  3. Management of clients.
  4. Footwear configuration.
  5. Management of orders.
  6.

Furthermore, at the involved customer’s request, there is the additional advantage of using different digitizers of those available on the market.

Real application examples mainly consisted in testing the different functionalities of the system with regard to the highest customization level, that is, the obtaining of customized footwear (depending on the shoe style selected by the user) from the foot digitization, the use of digital processes and the production of a last that is specific to every foot.

The system functionalities related to the selection of shoe styles were tested on 60 users.  Therefore, it can be asserted that the system proved to be efficient by 99.5% in all trials performed (about 60 users).

For this case study, the digital image of a foot was received from the USA, and the client chose the “Brogue” style to be manufactured in India.
